Scientific collaborator in malaria epidemiology and modelling

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. About 850 people from more than 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), within the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, develops and applies epidemiological, statistical and mathematical methods to advance innovation, validation, and application in the field of public health.

Within the Infectious Disease Modelling Unit of EPH we are looking for a:
Scientific collaborator in malaria epidemiology and modelling (100%).

Your position

  • collating and extracting relevant data relating to malaria epidemiology and intervention programs in endemic countries,
  • planning, performing and interpreting epidemiological and statistical analysis
  • using models to simulate malaria transmission dynamics
  • developing standard data visualization tools
  • writing technical reports, scientific manuscripts and other outputs to disseminate results in international conferences, peer-reviewed journals and additional relevant forum
  • supporting malaria endemic countries on the use of evidence for decision making
  • liaising with modelers in the team to provide fundamental information needed for the models
  • mentoring other team members as required

Your profile

(1) MSc or PhD in epidemiology, statistics, mathematics or related discipline
(2) Strong data management and data analysis skills with a good understanding of statistical/mathematical modelling
(3) Proficiency with statistical software R
(4) Excellent knowledge of GIS software and/or other mapping tools
(5) Ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and in a culturally diverse environment
(6) Ability to initiate, plan, implement and deliver programs of work to tight deadlines (7) Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English, with good presentation skills
(8) Ability to work independently and as part of a team on large research projects

Experience living in a low-income country, working in the field and/or interacting with health authorities is an asset. Applicants with previous expertise in infectious disease epidemiology are especially encouraged to apply. Experience in Non-Governmental Organizations and/or the private sector would be an advantage.
