Senior Researcher Fixed Term Position

2-3 fixed term senior researcher positions at the Department of Future Technologies at the University of Turku

The University of Turku is world-class multidisciplinary research university, which offers challenging employment opportunities and a unique vantage point into both Finnish and international scientific communities as well as education.

The Department of Future Technologies at the University of Turku has 2-3 fixed term senior researcher positions in the FitOptiVis-project. The project is co-funded by Business Finland and European Union (ECSEL), and is currently in the midpoint of the 3 year term. The project focuses on design and evaluation of integrated circuits to meet the needs of modern edge computing approach, especially for image and video processing applications. The European consortium also provides software components and tools to aid the designers in building new systems from existing building blocks. The team at UTU is planning to design and manufacture 3 integrated circuits using 28nm CMOS technology. Currently the first IC has been designed and is being processed at the foundry. The next two versions will build upon the first version, with advanced accelerators and sophisticated power management features. We are looking for experienced IC designers, both in the digital and analog domains. The tasks would include leading a team of designers, or being a senior member of the team. In the analog domain the focus will be on implementing and improving the current DC-DC converters, phase locked loops and in-house SRAM cells. In the digital domain the focus is in implementation flow from the VHDL description to actual IC, including integration of IP cores (both external and developed in the project). As the base line we are using RISC-V CPU core, and the chosen variant uses SystemVerilog as the main language, so knowledge of Verilog/SystemVerilog is an advantage.

The positions are fixed term, and they are expected to start on 1.2.2020 and end on 31.5.2021.

The applicant is expected to

  • Be familiar with the design and implementation of integrated circuits, including knowledge of the tools
  • Have a doctoral degree in a relevant field or a master’s degree with working experience

The following merits will be taken into account

  • Programming skills (C/C++, other), HW design and IP cores (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog)
  • Experience in HW/SW codesign and project work
  • Experience and publications demonstrating scientific aptitude and/or working experience in the field

The requirements for the positions, in terms of formal qualifications, come from the rules of the University. For a senior researcher this means a doctoral degree or a master’s degree with working experience in the field. Additionally the applicant is expected to be capable to work independently.

The salary for a Senior Researcher is based on the University salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a Senior Researcher, the salary is at levels 4-6 on the job demands chart, where the task specific salary component is 2535,20-3423,25 euro per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is a 6% – 50% of the task-specific base salary.

There is a six (6) month trial period.

Applications must be submitted by 27st of January, 2020 (23:59), using the electronic application form of the University of Turku on the following address:
